Keep it small

How to build a shorter newsletter

I haven’t written a newsletter in over a month, so getting back to it feels daunting.

I used to write a 1000+ word newsletter that would keep me busy for 4 hours.
I was obsessed with getting my big ideas down on paper.

I don’t have that same drive, but I still want to write long form.

So, without further introduction,

Here’s the 3 step plan to get back to it:

  1. New Structure

I want something that people can read in less than 2 minutes so:

  • It won’t overwhelm someone

  • I can write it in less than 60 minutes

This will keep the habit of writing longform strong while not interfering with my other life plans.

  1. Write it the day the old one comes out

A newsletter should be on tap as another one is coming out.

If you fall behind on one, you will start to drown in creating new content, then you go down a dark path of regrets.

This also gives you time to come back before the deadline to make any changes that will improve it.*

*Often, we don’t think so clearly as we type. Consolidating knowledge makes a masterpiece.

  1. Lesson first, story later

I want people to stay for me, not for what I promise in the letter.

The mind mender is not my personal journal first, it’s how I get the lessons out for people to digest.

In the story I’ll share:

  • What happened last week

  • What’s going on in the coming week

In this one, I’ll share what happened to my newsletter and what I plan to do in the coming month.

What happened to the newsletter?

I became overwhelmed.

I saw the grandiose nature of what I wanted to do (help people with their mindset/perspective) and felt all of the imposter syndrome I was trying to escape.

I felt the need to have something more systematic so I could put people through a process.

Then, I started procrastinating.

Instead of keeping it small, I stopped doing it.

It was easier to not do it than to face some friction.

So, I decided I should go smaller, thus the new format.

What’s to come?

I want to write a smaller newsletter once a week around what I’ve been learning.

I am getting back into podcasts, books, and learning from Youtube videos.

Video editing and shooting has me captivated since it helped me when I started out.

I also get the best feedback from people when I’m on a call, so maybe there’s a pattern there.

Thanks for sticking around

I appreciate everyone who subscribed recently (putting me up to 18) and all who stuck around.

I hope you find value in what’s to come.
